So, I'm sitting at work yesterday and I'm moving along working hard and the phone rings. So of course I naturally reach for the phone with a smile and answer, "Good afternoon. Blue Ridge Christian Academy, this is Tiffany." I'm greeted with a obviously concerned hubby Joel. "So...yeah...umm...Emmelyn has swallowed a coin." Of course my heart begins beating rapidly and I switch in to "mommy mode" and begin my natural course of freaking out. After several questions it is discovered that she is breathing fine, but is coughing and vomiting. We both agree that the next step is the Emergency Room. He begins to wake William and proceed to the car when Emmelyn announces, "I swallowed it!" Somehow I find some comfort in this...for a moment...and then I realize that she is a tiny little girl...we need to find out what coin exactly. Joel pulled out a handful of change and she picks out a nickel. A nickel! Emmelyn is a tiny little girl and I try to figure out how that is coming out of her...and decide that a call to at least the pediatrician is a good thing. Joel hangs up with me and calls the pediatrician office. I of course do nothing but wring my hands and try my best to control my breathing while keeping a smile and answering questions about the copier...and every one's Internet connections. When the phone rings...it doesn't even finish a ring when I pick it up. Relief - the pediatrician's office said it's nothing to worry over...to keep an eye on her bathroom habits and make sure it moves through. Well...wonderful... I get to dig through ....Emmelyn's stomach contents at each visit to the bathroom (oh I appreciate my mother more daily). As I'm finishing up my conversation with Joel, I begin to hear Emmelyn coughing in the back again. My heart speeds up. Joel quickly tells me he has to get off the phone, Emmelyn needs him. He quickly hangs up and I'm left listening to a dial tone while my heart beats out of my chest. Apparently Emmelyn had lied to her dad out of fear of the ER and him being angry when she told her father that she had swallowed the nickel. She had begun coughing again because it was still lodged in her throat - but she did not inform her dad of this. She began asking for water and so Joel got her some water. She took some big gulps and then vomited again. And what did we find? A not-so-shiny nickel amongst her lunch.
So, we had an eventful Friday.
Friday night Emmelyn AND William spent the night with their grandmother. I actually did alright. I only called and checked on him twice. According to Donna (grandma), William did wonderfully and she called once he started seeming to miss me too much. I picked him up and he was all smiles, anxious to love on me. It was a rather sweet reunion and he has been in a wonderful mood all evening.
Well - I must go entertain the little ones.
